Deciding between two?
What separates one technique from another, with what the catalogue holds of each.
- Embroidery lace or jacquard ribbon?One is stitched onto a finished tape, the other woven into the cloth on the loom. What that changes for weight, drape and wear.
- Zari or sequin work?Two ways of putting shine on a border: metallic thread woven through, or discs stitched on. What each one does to a garment.
- Sequin work or mirror work?Both catch light, but one stays flexible and the other does not. What that means for a curve, a hem and a press.
- Zari or mirror work?Two ways of putting shine on a border: metallic thread carried through the weave, or rigid mirrors stitched to the face. Only one of them presses flat.
- Embroidery lace or crochet lace?Thread worked onto a ground, or a ground built from loops. One adds weight, the other lets light through.
- Jacquard ribbon or crochet lace?A pattern woven solid into the cloth, or a ground built from loops that light passes through. What each one does at a curve.
- Cotton or jute trim?Two natural fibres that behave nothing alike once cut, washed or worn against skin.
- Cotton or denim trim?Denim is a cotton twill, so the question is not the fibre but the finish: what each is specified for, and what each does on the first wash.
- Gara or Banarasi border?Two saree border traditions: dense Parsi floral embroidery, or Varanasi brocade figured in zari.
